American Literature (G6-G8)
The purpose of this unit is to introduce young scholars to the roots and influences of American literature and culture, beginning with the Native American period and ending with Postmodernism. In addition, the course will expose students to a variety of texts that will better prepare them for advanced and college prep courses. Students will be exposed to engaging, rigorous assignments that include: Analysis of literary and cultural elements in literature from each period including vocabulary, essays, poetry, speeches, fiction and nonfiction texts, construction of original poems, essays, and speeches for each period, personal guidance for effective research skills, choice-based projects, exposure to the contributions of the Performing and Visual Arts relevant to each period, cultural and religious aspects, influences and contributions.
